This really is fascinating research! Based on a limited search on good 'ol Google (see some links below), it seems that the meaning and expectations of kissing are far more diverse than expected. Kissing itself is not universal, and some cultures don't even recognize kissing, while others consider it gross.
For many, kissing has long been considered an act of intimacy or affection with someone of closeness and familiarity, while others consider a kiss as a sign of friendship, or used during a welcome or goodbye. While many cultures include kissing as an important and meaningful gesture, some cultures do not recognize kissing at all (e.g. Somalia and some South Pacific islands), and others such as Inuit or Maori New Zealanders kiss by brushing their noses together and sharing one's breath. Some religious-based cultures have also made public kissing illegal (e.g. orthodox Muslim). Even across North America, sub-cultures and generations have varied expectations around kissing and what is meaningful. After researching this fun topic, I now believe that the most confusing is country for kisses is France, with differing expectations for number of kisses to the cheek depending on the region. Parisians consider two kisses the norm, Provence leans toward three, and Loire Valley considers four kisses the most acceptable! So, men...when greeting the apple of your eye, do you blow a kiss from across the room, kiss on the cheek, mouth, hand, or...? Women, how do you greet your love? Wishing you a heart-filled (plus or minus the kiss) Valentine's Day Cindy Fehr RN(NP) https://linktr.ee/cfehr1 Life can be a constant, daily struggle with the juggle - expectations to perform, to be all to everyone, or busyness of multiple demands. As (over)committed, responsible, always-on-the-run individuals, we can lose sight of ourselves, our needs, and our desires. Self-care should not be viewed as selfish or over-indulgent. Instead, unapologetic self-care should be seen as essential...to refill our cups, so we can give others our best and not just the leftovers!
When you think of self-care, what comes to mind? Long baths, spa days, and cocktails with girlfriends, exercise, eating healthy, sleeping more, meditating,...? Or is it simply stealing moments to refill, relax, and to just be? Should we not integrate these into our everyday lives? Can they be incorporated in what we view as normal daily tasks, but with purposeful focus? Or is it a specific time we incorporate into our routine to focus on our holistic self? I am of the mind that society (including this posting's message) should not define what you or I value within our self-care time. It should be unapologetically unique to you (and me)...intentional attention to caring for your mind, body, spirit, soul, and social being, even if that means you sitting, staring outside at the snow falling (or rain) and not really thinking of anything but silence. May you consider taking some time for unapologetic self-care 💖 Cindy Fehr RN(NP) Continuing Professional Development (CPD) is the means by which health care professionals maintain and improve their knowledge, skills, and competence, and develop the professional qualities required throughout their professional life.
For NPs in family practice, CPD means keeping up with the endless updates to guidelines and prescribing/deprescribing recommendations. I also value ensuring this education is Canadian, which is why RxFiles (one of my favorite Canadian prescribing resources) is an annual update I try never to miss. It is fast-paced, chalked full of clinical pearls, and highly relevant to my everyday practice. Attending these sessions makes me a better clinician with critical reflections on what is important to share with my colleagues and patients. So while it means time away from family and clinic, it is vital to being able to give my all, every day! Bonus, this year it is once again online (thank you COVID-19) - silver linings right!?!
