Our skin offers a direct reflection of health inside our body. When our digestion, hormones, blood sugar, immune system or other body systems are out of whack, this imbalance often shows up in the skin.
Here's some secrets: Eating a variety of superfoods & antioxidants like vitamin C. It’s needed to maintain a strong immune system and is a key ingredient in giving you healthy, radiant skin. Get it in blueberries, papaya, strawberries, kiwi, and even sweet potatoes. Get sufficient water per day — 13 cups for men, 9 cups for women. Mix it up with Coconut water which has intense hydrating properties and is also a good source of vitamin C, potassium, calcium, and magnesium. The fatty acids in omega-3 help keep membranes of your cells healthy and strong. Healthy cells not only keep out harmful materials, but they also keep water and nutrients in. Healthy skin cells translates into softer, moisturized, and healthier skin. Find omega-3 in salmon, walnuts, tuna, and flax seeds. If you have trouble getting enough omega-3 in your diet, consider an omega-3 supplement. Avoid sugary foods and simple carbohydrates which triggers an insulin spike that can cause inflammation. If you crave carbs and sweetness, a good way to trick your taste buds and benefit your skin — is to reach for fresh fruit instead. Most fruit contains fiber, which helps temper the effect that the fruit has on your blood sugar. Any chocolate lovers out there? Good news, Cocoa has a hydrating effect on the skin, improving its elasticity. As a bonus, dark chocolate also has flavonols, especially potent antioxidants. For greatest benefit to your skin, snack on dark chocolate containing 70% cacao or higher. Green tea anyone? Green tea is another double threat when promoting healthy skin. When you consume green tea, you bulk up on antioxidants, which combat inflammation. If you add a bit of orange or grapefruit juice to green tea, you'll keep the antioxidants in your body longer, giving them more time to work for you. Love you skin from within 😉 Cindy Fehr RN(NP)
