Did you know that the perfect pout has been researched? Research involving greater than 1000 participants across 35 countries provided digitally altered photographs of a female model's lips to identify ideals for lip proportions. The respondents identified whether each altered photograph of the lips appeared to have received any cosmetic treatment and whether the lips look "attractive and natural" or "artificial and unnatural". The ideal ratio in heights of the lips was identified at 1:1 with acute angles at the corners of the lip and defined cupid bow. They also concluded that perceptions of lips as either attractive or artificial was not strictly based on the dimension of the lips alone, but varied between people of different age groups. Not surprising to me was that younger people's perception of natural and attractive was found to be a bigger lip than the older group. However, surprising to me was that there were no specific differences in preference based on the ethnicity of the respondent. So what does this mean for me as a provider of lip plumps and subtle enhancements? Well, while knowledge is power and there likely are some mathematical ideals in this world of beauty like "divine proportion" or "golden ratio", I also recognize that beauty is in the eye of the beholder (the patient themself) and that my goal is always to keep things natural appearing. Absolutely no "duck lips" from me! Remember that if you desire some additional lip height (because your lips are naturally thin), best results are developed over time...too much too fast will look unnatural and risks negative side effects. So trust in the process and in my skill...the result being a subtly and naturally beautiful pucker that not only looks amazing but also feels soft and kissable.
