The word "unicorn" comes from the Latin word unicorn is, meaning "one horn". According to legend, a unicorn holds the power to divine truth and will pierce a liar's heart with its horn. Unicorns have a long history across various cultures, who all have different iterations of unicorn myths. Unicorns have represented many different things, including innocence, purity, freedom, and power. It was the symbol of Scotland first associated with the country around the fifteenth century. When Scotland joined with England, the unicorn was retained as part of Scotland's new emblem, now sharing its space with the English lion.
