EMSELLA™
aka Kegel Throne
Incontinence Care & Intimate Wellness

EMSELLA™ is a breakthrough incontinence
treatment for women and men

The involuntary leakage of urine, known as urinary incontinence, affects women and men of all ages and body types. It is a condition that can dramatically impair one's quality of life and engagement in activities. It is thought to be greatly under-reported and under-treated. Research identifies up to 40% of individuals over age 30 experience some lack of control, affecting their confidence and sense of self. The EMSELLA™ Chair allows you to regain control and improve your quality of life, without surgery, discomfort, or medications.
What is the EMSELLA™ Chair?
The EMSELLA™ Chair is the first FDA and Health Canada approved device of its kind for the treatment of female and male urinary incontinence.

Are you afraid to sneeze, cough, laugh, or exercise for fear of losing control of your bladder? Do you try to avoid jumping, lifting and running or suffer from embarrassing leakage?
You are not alone – urinary incontinence is a common problem,
but happily there is help.
A weakened pelvic floor can cause urinary incontinence. For women, pregnancy, childbirth, weight gain, and aging hormonal changes all contribute to pelvic floor weakening and urinary incontinence. Over 200 million people worldwide are affected by incontinence.

The pelvic floor is a group of muscles and tissues that forms a sling, or hammock, at the bottom of your pelvis. These muscles help hold your organs in place.

A weak pelvic floor may contribute to an inability to control the bowels or bladder, cause back pain and weakness and /or lead to less pleasure with sexual intercourse.

For men, weak pelvic floor muscles can lead to issues with erections, ejaculation and urination.
Whether you have had a prostatectomy due to an enlarged prostate or cancer, you no longer need to suffer with losing urine or diminished bladder control with the EMSELLA™ Chair. Post-operatively, EMSELLA™ is a great way to lessen leakage and give you back control and confidence. Strengthening the pelvic floor is also part of a comprehensive erectile dysfunction treatment plan. Erectile Dysfunction can be a result of an underlying condition such as a weak pelvic floor or nerve damage. Hypertrophy of the pelvic muscles leads to a block of the outflow of blood. Once these muscles are strengthened using the EMSELLA™ Chair, better erections may follow.

Here are some common signs that may indicate you have weak pelvic floor muscles or a problem in this area:
  • Involuntarily leaking urine when you exercise, laugh, cough or sneeze
  • A frequent need to get to the toilet quickly (or not getting there in time)
  • Constantly needing to go to the toilet
  • Difficulty emptying your bladder or bowel
  • Loss of control of your bladder or bowel
  • Involuntary flatulence
  • A prolapse:
    • In women, this may be noticed as a bulge in the vagina or a feeling of heaviness, discomfort, pulling, dragging or dropping in this area
    • In men, this may be felt as a bulge in the rectum or a feeling of wanting to empty the bowels without actually needing to
  • Pain in the pelvic area
  • Pain during sexual intercourse

BTL EMSELLA™ is a breakthrough treatment for incontinence. This unique technology revolutionizes intimate health and wellness by offering men and women a non-invasive solution for pelvic floor weakness.

This highly effective treatment draws its therapeutic power from focused electromagnetic energy. A single EMSELLA™ session induces thousands of pelvic floor contractions, which reeducate and tighten the pelvic floor muscles. EMSELLA™ treatment improves bladder control to prevent urinary leakage for both men and women.

Who is a Candidate for The Emsella Chair?

EMSELLA™ is a innovative treatment that can help with a wide range of health conditions in men and women.  From incontinence to sexual dysfunction, EMSELLA™ can help you break free of the pain and discomfort caused by a weak pelvic floor, so you can move forward with more confidence. The EMSELLA™ Chair is suitable for men and women of any age. Whether you've developed urinary incontinence with age, after surgery, or following childbirth or menopause, this safe and effective treatment option may be right for you.

The EMSELLA™ Chair delivers noninvasive electromagnetic energy to all of the muscles in the pelvic floor in order to strengthen and restore their neuromuscular function.
  • Treatments are comfortable.
All you'll feel during your treatment is your pelvic floor muscles involuntarily contracting.
You are fully clothed for treatments.
  • There is absolutely no downtime.
You can get back to daily activities immediately after your session.
  • Results are evident within 3 weeks.
Regain control of your bladder in under a month!

This treatment works best on grades 0-1 level of urinary incontinence. Some patients get worse for a short time before they see improvement. Some patients may need more treatments depending on the severity of their condition. The results vary from person to person, and an exact results cannot be predicted.

How BTL EMSELLA™ works

The EMSELLA™ Chair uses noninvasive HIFEM, which stands for High-Intensity Focused Electromagnetic energy, to produce supramaximal contractions of the pelvic floor muscles — the equivalent of 11,000 Kegels in 28 minutes! With these contractions, the pelvic floor muscles become stronger, and the vaginal wall becomes tighter. The tissues supporting the pelvic organs are, in a sense, rebuilt during this incontinence treatment. This process leads to a decrease in urge and stress incontinence, better urine retention, and increased sexual satisfaction.

Many clinical studies support the effectiveness of the EMSELLA™ Chair for treatment of urinary incontinence. The reported patient satisfaction for improved quality of life is 95%. In one study, 50% of participants reported complete resolution of their incontinence.

An additional clinical study evaluated improvements in female sexual function following treatment with the EMSELLA™ chair and 100% of study participants reported improvement at 3 months (which is why it’s also known as the ‘orgasm throne’, ladies).

EMSELLA™ is the first FDA-cleared & Health Canada approved, non-surgical incontinence treatment for improving urinary retention. During the incontinence treatment, a patient sits, fully clothed on an ergonomic chair, nicknamed “the Kegel throne.”  The chair employs High-Intensity Focused Electromagnetic (HIFEM) energy. This energy safely penetrates the pelvic floor, activating neurons that signal the muscles to contract. One, 30-minute treatment stimulates 11,000 supramaximal contractions (the equivalent of 11,000 Kegels.)

Frequently Asked Questions:

Who are the best candidates?
Men and women of any age who are afflicted with levels 0 and 1 stress urinary incontinence are the best candidates. However, the treatment of improving pelvic muscle tone should theoretically help many others in reducing the amount of leaking. This would include many males who have had prostate cancer treatment.

How long and how many sessions do I need?
A complimentary consultation will help ensure EMSELLA™ is right for you and tailor a treatment plan specifically for you. Prior to the first treatment, you will take an incontinence survey to determine the severity of your condition. Three months after all the treatments, you will be asked to take the survey again to measure the improvement. Treatment typically consists of two sessions per week for three weeks, for a total of 6 sessions. It is very important to complete your first 6 sessions without interruption for optimal results. Results can be prolonged with maintenance treatments every 3-12 months and Kegel exercises.

What does the procedure feel like? Is it painful?
Many describe the experience as tingling or intense but comfortable contractions of pelvic floor muscles during the procedure. It should not be painful BUT is like a pelvic floor bootcamp! There may be some stiffness getting up from the chair after the session, and some mild soreness the next day, but it does not interfere with any activities.  Remember, it's like an intense bootcamp workout for your pelvic floor so, like other bootcamp workouts, you should feel like you have worked (or overworked) the area but this is to be expected and okay!

You will experience gradually increasing tingling and muscle contractions during the procedure. It will feel more intense as the muscles warm up. The vibrating alternates between fast contractions and deep throbbing, much like a handheld massager. The sensations in the pelvic area are normal and expected, and cause no pain. The intensity level at 100% works best, but it can be lowered if there is discomfort. However, most patients are able to comfortably treated at 100% intensity. You remain fully clothed during the treatment, and may resume normal daily activities immediately after the treatment.

What do I wear?
Dress comfortably on the days of treatment so that your legs can be spread open and your back straight so that the pelvis is tilted correctly. It is best to not have any metal on the body. Take off jewelry on your hands. Wear light fabric bottoms so that electromagnetic energy is not hindered. Do not wear jeans or heavy sweats. Avoid bottoms with zippers, or bring light shorts to wear. Take out coins and credit cards in your pockets. Some Lululemon leggings have metallic fibers, so do not wear that brand of legging. All electronic devices such as phones, watches, iPads, and computers must NOT be used while on the EMSELLA™ chair because the electromagnetic energy will harm these devices. Bring a book or magazine to read during the treatment. Patients who are menstruating should not undergo the treatment on that day.

Why invest in an EMSELLA™ treatment?
Research has found that 95% of clients treated reported significant improvement in their quality of life, following six or eight 28-minute treatments with
EMSELLA™. Additionally, most clients either no longer required the use of hygienic pads or significantly reduced their use of pads in their day-to-day life. The EMSELLA™ technology can bring significant improvements in sexual function as well.

What is the price of EMSELLA™ treatments?
Although Health Canada has approved this treatment for incontinence, insurance still does not cover the cost of EMSELLA™ treatments. It is considered an out of pocket expense. Each initial EMSELLA™ treatment costs $300; maintenance treatments are at a reduced price. We also offer treatment packages so ask us about this at your consultation. To support you with initiating an EMSELLA™ package, we have partnered with Medicard® to offer reasonable financing options.

How long do results last?
Depending on the initial severity of the condition, changes may start to revert 6-12 months after the treatment. In the initial studies, patients were still satisfied after 6 months, but we are giving a less optimistic figure for those with more severe incontinence issues. For most, the internal changes can last 6-12 months.  Like all muscles, pelvic muscles start to sag without continued exercise. Aging and gravity are constantly working against the anatomy.  It is always wiser to have a maintenance treatment performed before the pelvic muscles have completely sagged. Otherwise it may take 6 treatments again to get the correction needed. It is impossible to get in thousands of Kegels, so maintenance treatments are recommended.

Can men benefit from an EMSELLA™ treatment?
Yes, men who experience mild to moderate urinary incontinence, or wake up often in the night to urinate (nocturia) can greatly benefit from this technology. Additionally, EMSELLA™   benefits for men using EMSELLA™ are the:
  • temporary increase of local circulation (THINK BIG),
  • increased sensitivity during intercourse

The EMSELLA™ treatment is also one of the most effective ways to treat erectile dysfunction. The electromagnetic energy helps restore your neuromuscular control while helping prevent and treat both incontinence and reverse erectile dysfunction.

Can EMSELLA™ help with female sexual wellness?
The EMSELLA™ treatment strengthens the pelvic floor muscles and muscles in both the vagina and vaginal canal. As a result, this treatment may enable patients to achieve orgasms more easily, experience stronger orgasms and an overall increased sensation.
It can also help improve symptoms of menopause by impacting the vaginal muscles and improving circulation. As a result, this can boost both arousal and lubrication.
