Who Cannot Undergo Laser Hair Removal? People suffering from serious skin conditions, such as psoriasis or dermatitis, are usually not candidates for laser hair removal. In addition, pregnant women, breasting women, and people who have a pacemaker should not pursue this procedure. Individuals who take certain medications, such as Accutane and Retin-A, are also not candidates. During our patch test, we ask you to fill out a detailed form that indicates any medication and/or medical history we should be aware about. How many treatments will I need? Multiple treatments are required to achieve the full hair removal effect. The hairs on your body are not always at the same stage, so you’ll need to undergo a few treatments, an average of six to eight weeks apart, to catch them all in the growth stage. Most areas require six to eight treatments. However, depending upon your skin tone, and hair colour and density, this may vary. Your laser provider will be able to give you a more precise estimate during your consultation. On average, about 80 percent hair reduction is achieved after six visits. When Will I Begin To See Results? Immediately after the treatment, your hair will look about the same. Over the next 7–14 days, the damaged hair follicles will push out the last remnants of the weakened hair. Thus, you will begin to see hairless skin in a few weeks. Remember, it will take several treatments to permanently remove hair. Typically, in four to six sessions, spaced about four to six weeks apart, you can expect to see 70-80 percent reduction in hair growth. For best results, get maintenance treatments done once a year for at least a couple years. How Do I Prepare for Laser Hair Removal? ● You must avoid sun for 4-6 weeks before and after treatment. Patients who are actively tanned or sunburned will need to re-schedule their treatment session (this is to prevent unwanted skin pigment changes). Additionally you cannot be treated if you have a spray or artificial tan. ● Avoid electrolysis, tweezing, and waxing for four weeks before treatment. ● Do NOT shave the hair on the day before and the day of the treatment, leaving stubbles for the technician to easily identify the borders of the hair bearing skin. ● Skin should be clean-shaven and thoroughly cleansed, removing any makeup, creams, oils, topical anesthetics or self-tanning products before laser treatment. ● If you have a history of herpes simplex virus (cold sores), prophylactic antiviral therapy may be prescribed. Are there any side effects? There is temporary redness and swelling that occurs immediately after treatment. Other potential side effects include hyperpigmentation, hypopigmentation, blistering and purpura (a laser bruise) in the treated area. |
Is Laser Hair Removal Painful? The discomfort from laser removal has always been noted significantly less than other methods like waxing. Some patients may feel slight discomfort, which has been compared to snapping a rubber band against the skin. To reduce discomfort, our GentleMax Pro laser machine uses a patented Dynamic Cooling Device™ (DCD™) technology to deliver consistent bursts of protective cryogen (a substance that produces very low temperature) to deeply cool the top layer of your skin before and after every pulse of the laser. In addition, its Air Cooling Compatible (ACC) technology improves patient comfort by directing cold air into the area. Our laser providers can also use ice packs to cool the area and make the treatment as comfortable as possible. Am I Required To Have A Consultation And Undergo A Patch Test? Yes, we will book a complimentary consultation appointment for you with one of our certified laser technicians prior to scheduling any laser hair-removal treatments. This is for your own protection, and we cannot make exceptions. At this time, you should also share with us any past experiences you have had with laser hair removal. What Does The Recovery Timeline Look Like? Recovery is relatively simple following laser hair removal. Patients will often experience bumps and redness that generally go away within 8 hours but may last several days. Ingrown hairs also might take several days to express. Dead hair shafts will often eject out over the first 2 weeks. Suntanning is not recommended for two weeks following the session. Patients should wear sunscreen when going out in direct sunlight as well. What Precautions Should I Take After Treatment? Sun exposure after treatment can increase risk of hyperpigmentation, so we recommend sun avoidance and use of broad-spectrum UVA/UVB sunscreen SPF 30 or higher. In the first few days after treatment, don't scrub or rinse the treated areas with abrasive skin cleansers. Written post treatment guidelines will be provided after your treatment. Can I shave or wax in between treatments? It is recommended to avoid other methods of hair removal in between treatments. This is because the more we shave/wax the more hair being stimulated. However, if it is absolutely necessary, we advise SHAVING only & keep it to a minimum. A few days before your appointment, shave the area that is being treated. How does laser hair removal compare to electrolysis? Both laser hair removal and electrolysis are effective at permanently removing unwanted hair. However, laser hair removal is much more efficient for large areas (such as legs, chest and back) because it treats many hairs at a time. Electrolysis, on the other hand, is a more painful method that only treats one hair at a time and is therefore appropriate for small areas. This difference also makes electrolysis very expensive for larger body areas. |
