Medical Microneedling

Do you want healthier, rejuvenated, natural looking results with
no surgery, no painful peels, or little down time?

If you answered YES then Medical Microneedling may be for you!

Medical Microneedling is a minimally invasive treatment that stimulates growth of collagen and elastin, leaving you with younger, naturally beautiful looking skin. Microneedling is derived from ancient acupuncture and mesotherapy. This treatment has many skin benefits, including treating acne scars, stretch marks, wrinkles, fine lines, enlarged pores, and uneven skin texture.

How does medical microneedling work?

Picture

Microneedling is also known as Collagen Induction Therapy because as the microneedles penetrate through the epidermis, it stimulates a healing reaction. The body recognizes that there's been trauma at the local site and recruits collagen, fibrin, elastin and nutrients to heal the area. This process reduces the appearance of wrinkles and enhances skin elasticity while improving  the appearance of age spots, black heads, and hyperpigmentation, as well as exfoliating the skin for a softer, smoother texture.

Benefits of medical microneedling:

  • Improves moisture retention
  • Reduces the appearance of fine lines and deeper wrinkles
  • Improves acne and traumatic scars
  • Improves skin tone and texture
  • Reduces the appearance of pores
  • Softens stretch marks
  • Lightens hyperpigmentation and sun spots
  • Fresher and younger looking skin
  • Minimal downtime so you can get back to your normal activities sooner
  • Minimally invasive, described as a sandpapery sensation and light vibration (numbing gel applied beforehand)
  • Amazing results with each treatment - multiple sessions for best results before maintenance treatments

Eclipse MicroPen® Elite

Picture
We use Health Canada approved Eclipse MicroPen® which is an advanced medical-grade automated microneedling device used to treat minor scarring related to acne, wounds, and aging.  The automated microneedling pen is a safe alternative to common skin resurfacing tools, such as lasers and dermal rollers.  A sterile cartridge containing 12 tiny micro-points is attached to the Eclipse MicroPen® Elite. The needles moves at high frequency over the surface of the skin. Gel is applied to the treatment area to aid the device as it glides across the dermis surface. These needles penetrate the skin at a controlled depth, typically several millimeters and we can adjust the treatment depth to suit the area and the problems being treated. These penetrations are actually controlled injuries that signal the skin to begin creating more collagen and elastin to heal itself. By creating micro-channels, topical gels, creams and serums are able to be absorbed more effectively, enhancing the effects in deeper layers of the skin. The MicroPen® Elite won THE Aesthetic Industry Award for "Best Micro-Needling Device".  The Eclipse MicroPen® Elite can be used on all parts of the body: face, neck, décolleté, arms, hands, legs, abdomen and back.

Pre-care Instructions

  • In the 48 hours prior to the procedure please avoid self tanners, sun exposure and products containing Vitamin A, Retinol, Hydroquinone, exfoliating acids or Benzyl Peroxide.
  • No prolonged sun exposure 24 hours before treatment as microneedling will not be administered on sunburned skin.
  • Please wait 2 weeks after laser treatments, Botox or Dermal Filler treatments to have microneedling.
  • If you have active breakouts, open lesions, skin infections, rosacea or eczema in the area being treated we will not be able to perform the procedure.
  • Please wait 6 months after discontinuing Accutane to have a microneedling procedure.
  • Microneedling is not recommended for women who are pregnant or nursing.

What to Expect at Your Appointment:

  • Most microneedling appointments take about 60-90 minutes including numbing time, depending on the size and number of treatment areas.
  • Skin is cleansed.
  • Topical anesthetic is applied to ensure your comfort, for about 10-20 minutes.
  • Skin is coated with a thin layer of topical hyaluronic acid gel.
  • The device is set to penetrate at a precise depth depending on your particular skin needs and areas treated.
  • The clinician gently presses the reciprocating tip of the applicator to skin, and glides it in one direction, gradually covering the treatment area. Several passes may be made.
  • Most patients report no significant discomfort – just a mild sandpaper-like sensation. A topical numbing cream will be applied to decrease any discomfort. The depth of the needles that we use also determines the level of sensitivity. Immediate pinpoint bleeding may occur, which will resolve within 10 minutes.
  • Microneedling can be performed on virtually any area, including face (it is safe for delicate tissues around the eyes), neck, décolletage, hands, arms, back, abdomen, and legs. The microneedling treatment itself typically takes 30 to 40 minutes, depending on the region.
  • The microneedling pen helps create channels to deliver these anti-aging infusions into the dermal layers below the skin surface.

Aftercare Instructions:

   AVOID
  • Use a gentle cleanser for the initial 24 hours after microneedling to rinse the treated area. Always make sure your hands are clean when touching the area treated.
  • No make-up for the first 12-24 hours post-treatment. You can apply light make-up the next day.
  • Avoid sunlight for 24 hours post-treatment. i.e. no tanning on a beach or in a tanning bed. This includes simple day to day tasks such as gardening.
  • After the initial 24 hours, apply a broad spectrum sunscreen with minimum spf 30. This should continue for at least 2 weeks.
  • Do not use any Alpha Hydroxy Acids, Beta Hydroxy Acid or Retinol (Vitamin A) for 3 days post treatment.
  • No exercising or strenuous activity for the first 24-48 hours post-treatment. Sweating and gym environments are harmful, rife with bacteria, and may cause adverse reactions.
  • No pool swimming, sauna, hot tubs, or steam showers for 24-48 hours post-treatment. This also includes simple day to day activities such as cooking over a hot stove for a long period of time, sitting next to a fireplace, etc.
  • Do not take any anti-inflammatory medications such as Ibuprofen, Motrin, Naproxen, or Advil. These agents will interfere with the natural inflammatory process that is critical and responsible for your skin rejuvenation.
  • Do not drink excessive alcohol since it will dehydrate the skin. Drink at least 8 cups of water a day.

SKIN CARE PRODUCTS
  • Cleansers: you can use your own gentle cleanser to cleanse your skin as usual.
  • Scrubs: Do not scrub your skin for 3 days post-treatment. You can scrub on the 4th day to help scrub off any dead skin due to the treatment.
  • Serums: There are a variety of serums to choose, depending on your skin type and skincare goals. Many include vitamin C and hyaluronic acid. Peptides, antioxidants, vitamins A, C and E, and growth factors work very well.
  • A minimum of 30 SPF sunscreen should be applied every day, even cloudy days. You can apply moisturizer after you apply on sunscreen.

Potential side effects

Redness, irritation, pin-point bleeding, heat sensation, itchiness, and swelling with most side effects subsiding within 12-24 hours. On rare occasions, rashes and reactions leading to infections may occur. Hyper-pigmentation is also another rare possibility but usually subside after a few weeks.

What to expect after your appointment

  • You may experience minor signs of redness or irritation, like a mild sunburn. Do not touch your face for a minimum of 4 hours after microneedling. While healing time varies by patient, most patients can expect 2-4 days of redness.  Final results are typically achieved within four to six weeks.
  • Improvement becomes noticeable over the course of several weeks as collagen builds, continuing for up to six months.
  • You may experience swelling, inflammation, itching, burning and possible breakouts.
  • You may have some dryness and flaking due to an increased turnover of skin cells. Allow old skin to flake off naturally and keep the skin moisturized.

  • Typically the first 1-2 days after treatment there is mild erythema and swelling.  After 2 days exfoliation and dryness may start and continues for a week. After 1 week improvement in the texture and tone of the skin is significant. 3 weeks later improvement in pigmentation begins. Finally, improvement in fine lines, wrinkles, scars can be seen after 6 weeks.

How often do I need to come?

  • For most patients, we recommend a series of 3 treatments spaced 4-6 weeks apart for optimal results. For patients with more significant skin care concerns such as acne scars, is it recommended to receive 6-8 sessions at 6 week intervals.
  •  Then, just one touch up session every 6-12 months maintains refined skin tone and texture.
  • Most obvious results are seen after the third treatment.
