Neuromodulation (aka wrinkle relaxer) is a nonsurgical technique using prescription injectable products derived from natural substances to soften, smooth, or prevent wrinkles from deepening around the eyes, forehead, neck, mouth, and chest. Neuromodulators relax overactive muscles that contribute to wrinkle formation and skin creases. Wrinkle relaxation treatments are intended to create a subtly refreshed and naturally younger-looking appearance. Untreated muscles still move normally, so it's the lines that are minimized, not your expressions!
How is Dysport aesthetic™ different from Botox Cosmetic®?
The effects are essentially the same but the product is slightly different. The same way ibuprofen is the active ingredient in both Motrin and Advil, Botulinum Toxin is the active ingredient in all four neuromodulators available in Canada. However, since Dysport aesthetic™ (sometimes called "naked Botox" does not have the carrier proteins that Botox Cosmetic® has, it acts slightly faster. Initial effects of Dysport aesthetic™ typically begin in 3-5 days, whereas Botox Cosmetic® often takes 5-10 days.
How long does a treatment typically last?
There is no downtime, meaning after the 10-20 minute procedure you can get back to your day. Clients typically start seeing subtle effects in 3-10 days and full effect in 14-21 days. A typical treatment lasts 3-6 months, depending on the natural activity level of the treated muscle area, and how quickly your body metabolizes the neurotoxin. Getting regular treatments essentially hits the "pause" button on skin creases caused by the aging process. If you choose to stop treatment, your lines will gradually revert to their pre-treatment appearance.
What areas are usually treated?
Neuromodulators treat dynamic wrinkles caused by muscles pulling at the skin when we make expressions. One of the most impressive aspects of neuromodulation is that it not only reduces the appearance of existing lines but helps prevent the creation of new ones - effectively "stopping the clock" on part of this part of the aging process.
Common areas of treatment include:
forehead lines (furrows or worry lines)
frown lines (11's)
lip lines (smokers lines)
reducing down turned smile
platysmal neck lines (tech neck)
hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating)

Is the procedure painful?
No, injections are done with a very small needle and most patients tolerate this quick treatment without the need for ice or numbing cream. Most patients compare the sensation to a small pinch or bug bite.
Some patients experience minor redness or bruising but these are easily concealed with makeup.
How long does a treatment take?
It really depends on how many areas are being treated AND if this is your first appointment, a follow-up appointment, or a maintenance appointment.
Marking injection areas and taking pre/post photos takes a bit of time but the treatment itself is super quick, lasting only 10-15 minutes typically.
How many treatments do I need?
Therapeutic and cosmetic improvement usually only requires one treatment, but individual results and duration of effect vary for each person.
Remember the correction of neuromodulation is only temporary and therefore requires maintenance treatments for continued effect.
Most clients will need to repeat treatment every 3-6 months for cosmetic maintenance of softened age lines.
How do I prepare for my appointment?
It is best not to drink alcohol 24 hours before your treatment to reduce the risk of bruising.
The injector will remove any make-up or products from the injection sites before treatment.
A topic antiseptic will then be used to cleanse the injection areas to help prevent bacterial contamination during treatment.
What do I need to consider after treatment?
Following treatment you will receive a post-treatment care handout.
General considerations for the first 24hrs after treatment include avoidance of strenuous exercise, saunas and hot tubs. You should also refrain from rubbing injection sites, wearing anything that puts direct pressure on injection areas (e.g. caps, ski or swim goggles, massage tables).
Avoid taking optional blood thinners such as ibuprofen, aspirin, red wine for 24hrs after treatment as these may make bruising more likely.
What are common risks, side effects or concerns with neuromodulation?
How much does neuromodulation treatment cost?
As Natural Beauty Medical Aesthetics, we price our services based on the area(s) that we're treating. We also steer clear of ambiguous price "guesstimations" and let you know the cost of everything up front during the consultation process, so you can relax knowing exactly what you'll pay for your treatment.
We take the "less is more" approach when it comes to wrinkle relaxers and soft tissue filler treatments to ensure that your results always look naturally beautiful. For first timers we usually stay on the cautious side with how much product we initially use, but we always invite all our clients back for a complimentary follow-up appointment at 2-3 weeks post-treatment so that we can make sure you're happy with the results and if needed, adjustments can be offered. If you prefer to be charged per unit (with adjustment units also being charged to you), please book a consultation so we can discuss your particular wishes.
Because male muscles tend to be larger and stronger, more product is required and therefore pricing is slightly higher.
We believe our prices are competitive and affordable. We accept debit, etransfer, and most major credit cards...and soon will also offer financing.
Due to new Canadian advertising regulations, we are no longer able to provide before and after pictures on our website for treatments that involve prescription drugs (including Botox, Dysport, Nuceiva, Xeomin). If you would like to review specific examples of before and after treatment effects, please book a complimentary consultation and we would be happy to provide these.
Please be aware that results and treatment experiences may vary from client to client, taking into consideration factors such as age, lifestyle and medical history.
